Springs and Bricks

Would you describe your doctrinal beliefs as springs or bricks?

Why?

I think I am leaning towards the springs. The unfortunate thing about bricks is that they are usually used to build walls. Then there is the temptation to have only two dimensional relationships. You believe what I believe then you are "in"...if you don't believe what I do than you are "out". Rather, like the springs on a trampoline, doctrine should be stretched without fear of it breaking. THe effect of this "trying" of our faith should be to throw us higher and higher. An added benefit is that we can invite others along for the ride without doing a spiritual "strip search" to see if they are "carrying" any "false" beliefs...God usually does a better job with that anyway!

Thats a good quote and I think I understand where the "prince of preachers" is coming from. There does have to be stability in our doctrine but that "rock" is Christ, not a set of doctrinal beliefs. Why? Because if doctrine is the basis of my relationship then it all falls through the second I don't understand something. Like seeing Melanie hold hands with another guy in the mall ( I didn't see this by the way! : ). If your relationship is built only on what you can understand than your in trouble. If there is room in your relationship for things that you do not understand than you will trust her long enough to let her explain. If I make ridgid doctrine my mantra then my God will never be any bigger than my own understanding. This whole area is a big reason so many Christians turn agnostic. They say something like,"I just don't understand how God could _______" and the walk away.

"So who or what keeps me grounded? Well I've been married to Melanie for 15 years, and have 4 children. (2 boys & 2 girls) I like change. If you are married with children, you know that 'change' is what it's all about. Everyday is different. "

A relationship that is steady and yet always changing? Grounded and yet moving? Fascinating! Your a spring Dean! : ) A spring! : )
